Spelunking in Cagayan

Penablanca, Cagayan Province, Philippines

Do you want to travel independently but need ideas how to get to the places and experience the best a destination can offer? This itinerary might be useful to you.

Cagayan Province is a premier nature and adventure destination where caves, rivers, and forests serve as magnets for tourists. Culture such as churches, and shrines also form a great part of its offering to travelers.

Day 1
7:00 P.M. - Depart Manila for Tuguegarao City (or take a plane and adjust your schedule)

Day 2
5 – 7 A.M. - Arrive Tuguegarao; Check-in; Rest; Breakfast
9:00 A.M. - Take rented vehicle to Penablanca. This town is a cave country. Hundreds of cave entrances consisting of quite a number of systems make up the entire area. What’s nice about this is that given the number of caves, both adventure and non-adventure tourists can visit a cave ideal for him.

9:30 A.M. - Arrive Penablanca
Explore Callao Cave. You often see this in commercials and some Tagalog movies. This is a huge cave complex with some chambers illuminated by skylights. So this is no problem for claustrophobics. One chamber has been converted into a church. If you’re into photography, this is one ideal site. The play of light and the color of moss-covered walls, plus the rock formations would give you some really impressive photos.

If you want more adventure, explore Sierra Cave.
Mention the word, Sierra Cave and the locals would tell you one thing – romancing the mud. Yes, you will have to crawl on mud to get through tiny holes. The reward? Great limestone formations and (really) soft adventure. If you’re going to do this, check out first with the local authorities so they can open the cave entrance for you. They have to do this to protect the cave formations from vandals.

Lunch (packed); Swimming or exploring the upstream portion of Pinacanauan River, passing through Mororan

Also referred to as “the place of eternal rain” forest above the wall provide endless drops of waters. Its not really a great gush, but more of gentle drops where the visitors are “baptized”

Before 5:30 P.M. - Station yourself near the Bat Cave and wait for the Circadian Flight, when thousands of bats stream out of the cave hole.
6:00 P.M. - Back to Tuguegarao City

Day 3
A.M. - Explore other attractions in and near Tuguegarao by hired jeepney. Visit the following:

Tuguegarao Church - This is huge edifice where Catholics could spend some time for a Visita Iglesia.

Cagayan Museum - If you want to see fossils of prehistoric animals such as the relatives of rhinos and elephants, then some minutes in this small museum in the capitol complex can be spent.

Our Lady of Piat Church - They say that the image of the Lady can be miraculous for many visitors. Go there to either pray for one or to see one of the cultural aspects of the locals.

7:00 P.M. - Back to Manila
